I agree with adding the boat with chest item, similar to the minecart with chest. if a boat can hold two items, then it should be able to hold a large chest. using a lead rope, the player could attach one boat with a double chest to the boat the player occupies. this would allow moving larger quantities across oceans.. To create a chest boat simply right click on a boat with a chest in your hand and the chest will be placed in the boat. clicking on the chest will then open the inventory, which acts exactly as a normal chest and can be edited by multiple players at once. chest boats also persist over server restarts and will not lose their items..
